The AUB AI for Accessibility Hackathon focused on one thing: using AI to build assistive technology for people with disabilities.
Our team worked on speech-to-text for non-standard speech, with Arabic support. Speech recognition tools do badly with speech they were not trained on, which is exactly the case for many people with speech impairments. Our idea was to use AI to turn non-standard speech into standard speech first, so the recognition step becomes accurate.
We designed it as a service that developers could plug into their own applications, rather than as a single app.
